PUEBLO, Colo. (September 13, 2015) - The 12th-ranked CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season 2-1 Sunday versus 14th-ranked Fort Hays State University at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Soccer Sadium.
The Pack began the game quickly setting the pace, scoring the first goal of the match in the sixth minute on a shot from Matt Marchena (Sr., F, Littleton, Colo.), firing a shot into the back of the net following a corner kick that landed in the left side of the box. It is the first goal of the season for Marchena.
The Tigers evened the score in the 18th minute on soft touched pass into the right side of the net.
CSU-Pueblo and Fort Hays St. played much of the first half swapping possessions, managing several shots before heading into halftime tied at 1-1.
Fort Hays State held a 7-6 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes.
To open the second half, CSU-Pueblo managed three shots in the opening minutes.
In the 63rd minute, Fort Hays State took control of a Pack turnover, driving the ball deep into ThunderWolves territory before striking right side of the net and the 2-1 lead.
Pack goalkeeper Sam Haseltine (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) made five saves on thirteen Tigers shots.
CSU-Pueblo (3-1-0) will begin conference play on the road Friday when they travel to Golden, Colo. and play Colorado School of Mines. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
