CSU-Pueblo softball ends regular season with series sweep of Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. (April 26, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team used a seven-run and six-run inning, respectively in each game Sunday, securing two road wins over Fort Lewis College, completing a four-game sweep of the Skyhawks. The ThunderWolves end the regular season having won eight straight games.

Sunday, CSU-Pueblo and Fort Lewis awoke to poor weather conditions in the area, resulting in having to travel to New Mexico and play the doubleheader in Bloomfield, N.M.

In game one, the Pack got on the board on an RBI-single by Moriah Turney (So., SS, Brighton, Colo.) in the second inning.

The ThunderWolves offense came alive in the top half of the fourth inning with seven runs crossing the plate on four hits in the frame.

Three of the four hits in the inning came by way of the long ball. Chrystal Reese (Jr., OF, Pilot Point, Tex.) and Madison Wolfe (Jr., 1B, Oxnard, Calif.) hit back-to-back bombs leading off the inning.

With two outs in the same inning and the bases loaded, Sidney Bailey (Sr., OF, Pueblo, Colo.) crushed a grand slam homerun over the left field wall, bringing the Pack lead to 8-0 after three and half innings.

The Skyhawks scored two runs in the home half of the fourth inning, breaking the shutout.

Another run would cross for the Pack in the next inning with Turney collecting another RBI with a double to right centerfield.

The hitting barrage was not done however, when in the seventh the ThunderWolves scored another three runs on a three-run shot from Alexa Snyder (Sr., 2B, Pueblo, Colo.) taking the lead to 12-4 heading to the final at bat.

Fort Lewis tallied single runs in the final three innings but would not get close, in the 12-5 Pack win.

Starting pitcher Kelli Henry (Sr., Monument, Colo.) picked up her second complete game win of the weekend, allowing five runs on eleven hits with eight strikeouts. On the weekend Henry recorded 18 strikeouts while in the circle.

In the weekend finale, it was much of the same as the Pack jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a two-run shot by Reese, her third homerun of the series.

CSU-Pueblo broke the game open in the second inning with six runs on four hits. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homerun from Dora Hernandez (Jr., OF, Benton City, Wash.) along with a three-run double by Wolfe lifted the Pack to an 8-0 lead.

Starting in the circle for the ThunderWolves, Yvanna Bejarano (Sr., P, Thatcher, Ariz.) had minimal threats against her. Bejarano pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning, earning a double play to avoid any damage.

Two more runs would score for the Pack in the third inning on a two-run single hit by Bailey, putting the score at 10-0.

Bejarano tossed her second shutout of the season, allowing four hits with one strikeout in the game to improve to 6-7 on the season.

Turney ended the weekend going 7-for-12 at the plate with six RBIs, five runs, two walks and two HBP.

Reese also finished the weekend with three homeruns hit.

CSU-Pueblo (27-21, 23-13 RMAC) will now turn its attention to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament to be played at conference champion MSU Denver beginning Thursday April 30.
