ThunderWolves maul Yellow Jackets in doubleheader sweep

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 18, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team swept a doubleheader Saturday against Black Hills State University, winning game one 3-0, followed by a 12-2 thrashing in game two.

Pitching was the story of the day for the Pack, as both hurlers tossed a one-hitter and two-hitter, respectively, paving the way.

In the opener, Kelli Henry (Sr., Monument, Colo.) threw seven innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, a double in the second inning, while striking out six hitters.

The Pack used a three-run second inning, with Sidney Bailey (Sr., OF, Pueblo, Colo.) hitting a two-run double with the bases loaded, scoring the first runs of the contest.

A wild pitch later in the inning allowed for Alexa Snyder (Sr., 2B, Pueblo, Colo.) who had reached base on an infield single, to score and extend the lead to 3-0.

The ThunderWolves gathered seven hits, with Snyder and Madison Wolfe (Jr., 1B, Oxnard, Calif.) going 2-for-3 at the plate guiding the offense.

Other than the one double, Henry retired the Yellow Jackets in order from the fourth inning through the end of the game, improving to 11-5 on the season.

In game two, Wolfe threw a gem while in the circle. She allowed just two hits, both in the seventh inning, and two runs, finishing with six strikeouts.

The Pack offense exploded to score all of their runs through the first three innings.

CSU-Pueblo opened the bottom of the first with two runs crossing the plate on four hits in the inning, including an RBI-double from Wolfe, helping her cause.

Five runs crossed in the next inning for the ThunderWolves, highlighted by a two-run single by Chrystal Reese (Jr., OF, Pilot Point, Tex.), extending the Pack lead 7-0.

The Pack matched the run total again in the third, scoring five runs on six hits in the inning, as they batted around the lineup in the frame.

Reese stepped to the plate with the bases juiced, hitting a double down the right field line, clearing the bases and adding to the lead.

Two of the six hits in the frame were two baggers, number two of the inning came from Dora Hernandez (Jr., OF, Benton City, Wash.), scoring yet another run bringing the lead to 12-0 through three innings.

Throwing a no-hitter heading to the fifth, Wolfe began the frame with a hit batter. One out later, Rebecca Green hit a two-run blast to left field, erasing the no-hit bid.

Snyder and Reese each collected three hits and scored three runs in the game. Reese finished with five RBIs, her second highest in a game this season.

On the day, Snyder finished 5-for-7 at the plate with four runs and a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases, adding to her program record, now at 111.

CSU-Pueblo (21-21, 17-13 RMAC) will conclude the home portion of the schedule with another doubleheader Sunday against the same Yellow Jackets. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Prior to first pitch, head coach Christie Zinanti and the rest of the ThunderWolves will honor the five departing seniors who will be playing in the final games at home as members of the Pack.

The departing seniors are: Alexa Snyder, Kelli Henry, Sidney Bailey, Yvanna Bejarano (P, Thatcher, Ariz.), and Jasmine Vogel (OF, Oceanside, Calif.).
