LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Julie Sanchez (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) highlighted play for the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's golf team at the Las Vegas Desert Classic. The senior carded the top round on day two to finish in third place with a final score of 5-over 149. The ThunderWolves concluded the two-day event in a tie for fifth with a team total of 654. The fifth-place finish is the third highest of the 2014-15 season for the Pack.
Oklahoma Christian (623) won the event by one stroke over both Midwestern State (624) and Central Oklahoma (624). Anna Arrese Cortadellas of Oklahoma Christian and Marla Souvannasing of Central Oklahoma tied atop the leaderboard with final scores of 148, which was just one shot better than Sanchez.
Sanchez carded her top round of the 2014-15 season Monday, notching a 1-under 71. The top round of the day vaulted the senior four spots up the leaderboard from seventh at the start of the day to third at the conclusion of play. Sanchez finished play with a tournament-best five birdies. It was Sanchez's third top-five finish of the season.
Leina Kim (Jr., Saipan, CNMI) shot a 7-over 79 on the day, giving her a 36-hole total of 157. Kim's 13-over mark landed her in a tie for 10th.
CSU-Pueblo's three remaining players all shot lower scores on day two, helping the team move up two spots on the leaderboard.
Samantha Geisick (Fr., Greely, Colo.) moved up six slots on day two, finishing in 40th place with a total score of 173. Geisick carded an 84 on the final 18 holes, which was five strokes better than her day-one score.
Natasha Navarro (So., San Antonio, Texas) improved by one stroke to record a final score of 175. The sophomore finished in a tie for 42nd.
Megan McCutcheon (Fr., Monument, Colo.) made the biggest strides on day two, cutting 12 strokes off of her day-one score to card an 89. The freshman concluded the tournament in 63rd place with a final score of 190.
The ThunderWolves will take two weeks off before returning to action March 16-17 at the Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas.
