Big scoring innings propel ThunderWolves to sweep

SILVER CITY, N.M. (February 22, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team completed a weekend sweep in Silver City, N.M. Sunday with a comeback win in game one against Chadron State College 5-4, followed with a 14-1 victory versus Western New Mexico University in the weekend finale.

Alyssa Ubrun (Fr., 3B, Olympia, Wash.) belted three homers while collecting seven RBIs, and one triple, batting a .417 average, to guide the Pack to a sweep Saturday and Sunday in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series opener.

In game one, the home team on the scoreboard Chadron State, held the ThunderWolves to just two hits through six innings before a five-run explosion in the final at-bat propelled the Pack.

Single runs in the first and third inning, and a two more runs in the sixth built a 4-0 lead heading to the final inning.

Ubrun led the top half of the seventh inning hitting a bomb over the center field wall to get the Pack on the board.  Kennedy Smith (So., C, Fillmore, Calif.) singled through the left side of the infield in the next at bat, setting the stage for Sidney Bailey (Sr., OF, Pueblo, Colo.) who blasted her second homerun of the weekend, cutting the lead to one, 4-3 with no outs.

Two more singles and a walk for the next three hitters loaded the bases for the ThunderWolves. A strikeout and flyout later brought Lexie Martindale (So., Pueblo, Colo.) to the plate, she was entered to pinch hit in the previous inning.

Martindale connected a two-RBI single to give CSU-Pueblo the lead for good at 5-4.

Kelli Henry (Sr., P, Monument, Colo.) pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts, finishing with a season high five in the game. Henry improves to 4-3 this season.

In the weekend finale versus the home team Western N.M., the Pack quickly jumped on Mustang pitcher Mikayla Austin, tabbing her for eight runs on seven hits in just 1.1 innings pitched before being chased from the game.

Shortstop Moriah Turney (So., Brighton, Colo.) hit her first homerun of the season in grand slam fashion, clearing the bases full of ThunderWolves to take an 8-1 lead through just two innings.

Three more runs crossed in the third inning for the Pack when Madison Wolfe (Jr., P/1B, Oxnard, Calif.), also on the mound for the ThunderWolves, singled with the bases loaded scoring two runs adding to the lead.

Dora Hernandez (Jr., OF, Benton City, Wash.) got her share of the RBI frenzy with an RBI single of her own in the fourth inning.

Ubrun knocked her third homerun of the weekend and second of the day, in the sixth inning scoring Martindale who led off the inning with a double, stretching the lead to 14-1.

Wolfe threw five innings in the eight-run rule shortened game, allowing just five hits and one unearned run, a two out single scoring the Mustangs only run, to pick up her second win of the weekend and improve to 3-2 on the season.

Wolfe also had a strong weekend offensively, helping her cause on the mound, hitting her second homerun of the year, a grand slam Saturday against Chadron State.

Several members of the Pack finished a solid weekend at the plate, including Ubrun, Bailey's two homerun weekend along with a .455 (5-for-11) average, and five RBIs from Martindale and Smith paced the Pack.

CSU-Pueblo (8-8, 4-0 RMAC) will remain on the road next week and play a four game set at Metro State University Denver beginning Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Regency Athletic Complex.
