Pack hoops goes to 2-0 with 96-90 victory against UTPB

KINGSVILLE, Texas (November 15, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team concluded the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Tip-Off Challenge in Kingsville, Texas with a 2-0 record following a 96-90 victory against University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Sunday.

Senior Chris Golden (G, Milwaukee, Wis.) again led the way in scoring with 33 points, as he went 10-for-17 (58.8%) and knocked down eight 3-pointers (8-for-13, 61.5%). 

Four the of five starters were in double-figures, as junior Nelson Kahler (Noosa Heads, Australia) totaled 18 points and added 10 rebounds with four assists and three blocks. Junior guard Syrus McDonald (Flint, Mich.) totaled 16 points and four rebounds, while senior forward Odessa Lear (Parkhill, Colo.) totaled 13 points and career-high 14 rebounds for his first double-double as a member of the Pack.

The ThunderWolves shot 43.1 percent and hit 12 3-pointers. CSU-Pueblo was 22-of-27 (81.5%) from the free throw line. The Pack overcame UTPB shooting 51.6 percent from the field and hitting 14 3-pointers.

There were 19 lead changes and seven ties in the game. The ThunderWolves owned a 35-32 lead at the half.

Neither team held a lead larger than four during the second half and with 8:52 left the Falcons owned a small 66-63 advantage. Golden then took the game over and scored 16 straight points for the ThunderWolves to post a 16-7 run that handed the Pack a six-point lead, 79-73 with 5:39 left.

UTPB would only be able to get within three the rest of the way, as CSU-Pueblo went 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of play.

The ThunderWolves will host Midwestern State University Thursday in the home opener at Massari Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
