LAKEWOOD, Colo. (Trailblazer Stadium) - The CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team used a balanced attack in defeating Colorado Christian University 2-0, Sunday at Trailblazer Stadium.
The ThunderWolves netted the first goal in the 11th minute on a free kick taken by Jonny Sawyer (Sr., Forward, Aurora, Colo.), who connected from 25 yards out to the far post, for the 1-0 lead. It is the second goal of the season for Sawyer.
"Our guys played hard and disciplined today." said Pack head coach Roy Stanley. "We created better chances and kept the pressure throughout."
Heading into halftime, the two teams each fired two shots with CSU-Pueblo holding a 1-0 corner kick advantage.
Playing with the one goal lead for much of the second half, the ThunderWolves and Cougars played toe-to-toe as they statistically were evenly matched, both finishing with seven shots in the game.
Matt Marchena (Jr., Forward, Littleton, Colo.) who had a game-high three shots, headed a cross-pass from Ashton Carlson (Jr., Defender, Aurora, Colo.), to extend the Pack lead, 2-0 with under ten minutes remaining in regulation.
Zach Davis (R-Fr., Defender, Tucson, Ariz.) had a solid game on both sides of the ball, helping to minimize any scoring chance for the Cougars.
Pack goalkeeper Sam Haseltine (R-Jr., St. Louis, MO) made three saves on seven shots in the game.
"We want to finish strong in our final two games." Stanley said.
CSU-Pueblo (5-11, 4-8 RMAC) was eliminated from playoff contention Friday when the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs picked up their fourth straight win at home versus Regis.
The Pack will next play Friday at Adams State University. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the ASU Soccer Field.
