Pack falls 3-1 to Regis University in their first conference game of the season

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com- Sept. 20, 2013)-The CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team fell to Regis University by a score of 3-1, Friday night at Rawlings Soccer Complex.

After a physical game, and going shot for shot, the Pack just couldn't outplay the higher ranked Rangers team.
Regis got on the scoreboard early with a score in the eighth minute by Mark Kelly, with a rebound off the corner kick to the right back of the net.  The Pack retaliated with an offensive attack led by Rene Chacon (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) who took the shot 30 yards out, only to have the goal saved by Regis keeper Christain Nicolosi.

In the thirtieth minute, Connor Marcone (Jr., San Diego) put the ThunderWolves on the scoreboard with a goal off a corner kick by Sam Glawe (So., Allen, Texas), evening the score at 1-1.

Then, with 0.3 seconds on the clock, Regis forward Martin Maybin snuck one in the net, to get the score right before the buzzer.  At halftime the Pack trailed 1-2.
The Pack returned to the field firing on all cylinders.  With a near miss by Jonathan Hall, (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska) in the 64th minute, the ThunderWolves continued to make passes and shots, they just couldn't find the net.
"We played better in the second half, we completed more passes, made more plays," said head coach Roy Stanley.  "We had some good, intelligent play."

With nine minutes left on the clock, the Rangers made it final with an unassisted score by Mark Kelly, his second on the night.
According to Stanley, "It was our best game of the year."  "It was a good battle, but we have to give credit to Regis, they were organized and tough to break through."
Going into this week, CSU-Pueblo was ranked eighth out of nine teams in the RMAC weekly standings, with a record of 1-3.  Due to weather cancellations, Regis has only played and won one game so far this year.  This was the first conference game for both teams.
The loss puts CSU-Pueblo at 1-4 on the season, and 0-1 in the RMAC, with conference play just beginning.

The ThunderWolves travel to Golden, Colo. on Sunday to face nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines.  Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available.
"For our game Sunday against Mines, we just need to create more opportunities and score more goals," said Stanley.  "I'm very happy with the team's performance tonight; players stepped up and did some good things."
