PHOENIX, Ariz. (GoThunderWolves.com - April 23, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo saw its bid for a second straight RMAC title fall short Tuesday as it couldn't keep pace with a world-beating Western New Mexico squad, finishing second.
Despite CSU-Pueblo's best efforts, shooting reputable rounds of 29-over-par Monday followed by a 33-over-par score Tuesday, usually good enough to win RMAC Tournaments this season, it wasn't prepared for a Western New Mexico squad that issued its best rounds of the season at just the right time.
A day after the Mustangs turned in its third-best score of the season with a 25-over-par to surge to first place after one round, it remarkably cut 12 strokes to card its lowest round of the season - a 13-over-par 301 - to down the ThunderWolves.
The loss is especially painful, as CSU-Pueblo has been far and away the top team in the RMAC this season, winning four tournaments in total and two of four RMAC tournaments.
The Pack does take away, though, an exemplary performance by Leina Kim (RFr., Saipan, CNMI). The ThunderWolves' top golfer all year, she finished third with a two-round score of 8-over-par for her fifth-straight top five finish.
Michaela Breit (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) finished just outside the top five with a 10-over-par 6th-place finish. Domi Dinallo (Jr., Elephant Butte, N.M.) finished 13th with a 21-over-par performance while Julie Sanchez (So., Pueblo, Colo.) was 15th at 23-over-par.
CSU-Pueblo, unlikely to qualify for the NCAA Super Regional Championships for a second straight year due to its amazingly tough competition in the region, will likely see its season continue somewhat as Kim is expected to qualify for regionals as an individual. She has not finished lower than 12th place in any tournament this entire season.
