Winning streak snapped at nine after Pack splits with Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. (GoThunderWolves.com - Mar. 24, 2013) - Putting together a nine-game winning streak is has seemed easy at times for the CSU-Pueblo softball team. Solid pitching and an explosive offense have helped propel the Pack throughout much of the streak, unfortunately a team finally caught up to the second-ranked team in the conference as the team earned a split Sunday against Western New Mexico.

The timely hitting and solid pitching was alive in the first game as the ThunderWolves cruised to a 7-0 victory. In game two the Mustangs put together a five-run fifth inning and a double in the eighth inning to snap the nine-game winning streak, 6-7.

Lacey Chesser (Jr., Oxnard, Calif.) led the Pack offense in game one, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI's. McKenzie Joseph (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) would add a two-run double in the fourth inning that would lead to the removal of the Mustangs starting pitcher, Domi Shone.

Sianna Gomez (Fr., Glendale, Ariz.) would add her first career collegiate home run in the seventh to cap off the scoring for the Pack.

Game two would see the Pack jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning after a bases loaded walk scored Carlie Lucas (Sr., Granada Hills, Calif.). Sidney Bailey (So., Pueblo, Colo.) would also drive in two runs with a single.

Gomez' hot day would continue with a two-run home run to left center field that would drive in Bailey, giving the Pack a commanding 5-0 lead.

The lead would diminsh though as the Mustangs would rally in the bottom half of the fifth inning as three singles would drive in five runs to even the score.

The Pack looked to take control of the game in the eighth inning after Chesser hit her third home run of the season on a shot to left field, but with one out and two on the Mustangs would drive in the game-winning run on a double by Mariah McDonald.

The Pack will have their hands full next weekend when they take on Adams State, who sits just below the ThunderWolves in the conference standings. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Friday in Alamosa, Colo.
