Pack come up short in Durango

Jason Cowan

Durango, Colo. (Gothunderwolves.com -  Oct. 6, 2013) The CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team scored the only goal of the game vs. the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Sunday.

However, it was not the goal they wanted to score.

In the eighth minute, the Pack scored an own goal after midfiender/forward Jonathan Hall (Sr. Anchorage, Alaska) tried to clear the ball in an eventual 1-0 loss.

"Our guy goes to clear it with the inside of his foot, it lifts off the ground, and it hits Jon Hall in the shin," head coach Roy Stanley said. "It just sucked it happened in the game. There was nothing he could have done, the surface down here is always a little uneven, that was unfortunate."

Although trailing the majority of the game, the Pack, had opportunities to tie the game, taking nine shots, four on goal.

One chance in particular came in the 85th minute, midfielder/forward Dustin Geist (Sr. Durango, Colo.), hit a header off a rebound that the Skyhawk keeper saved.

There was a long free kick that the keeper didn't deal with it; it bounced and went off the cross bar and bounced back out, and Dustin had a free header, but the keeper saved it, Stanley said.

Although the Pack suffered the loss, they had a 4-2 corner kick advantage against the Skyhawks, with all four opportunities coming in the second half.

"The first half I think they did outplay us, they were at home and working hard," Stanley said, "The second half was very even, when you look at goal scoring chances and opportunities, we had the better of the opportunities."

Goalkeeper Sam Haseltine (So. Saint Louis, Mo.) finished the game with seven saves on 20 shots by the Skyhawks, eight coming on goal.

"I would put up Sam as the defensive player of the week," Stanley said.

Next up, the Pack will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on UC-Colorado Springs on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
