ThunderWolves lose 2-1 in double overtime

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – October 25, 2013) – After a hard fought battle the Pack finds themselves on the losing end of a double overtime heartbreaker.

The CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team hosted the Metro State Roadrunners Friday evening at the Rawlings Soccer Complex.  And after 101 minutes of playing time Metro State came away with the 2-1 win.

The ThunderWolves got on the board first, when at the 30th minute Cezar Plascencia (So., Anchorage, Alaska) scored from a deflection off the free kick, with an assist by Chad Smith (Sr., Las Vegas, Nevada) to put the Pack up 1-0.

CSU-Pueblo goal keeper Sam Haseltine (So., St. Louis, Mo.) had eight saves on the day, three coming in the first half. Defensively the Pack remained strong and kept the Roadrunners without a score in the first half despite their eight shot attempts.

Metro State (9-3-3 overall) continued to take shots and eventually found the net. At the 56th minute, Brenden Hughes kicked it to the high right side of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

"The guys put up a tremendous battle," said head coach Roy Stanley. "They kept it tight and limited the other team to taking long shots."

Regulation ended in a tie, so for the first time this season at home the men saw overtime play. The first ten minutes of overtime had repeated opportunities for both sides, but only one shot came on goal made by Metro State but ultimately saved by Haseltine, forcing double overtime.

Less than two minutes into the second overtime, Metro State forward Clyde Glastetter scored the final goal of the night, giving the Roadrunners the 2-1 win.

"They did a solid job out there," said Stanley "they've shown a lot of spirit and energy."  "They left their hearts and a lot of other stuff on that field tonight."

The Pack are now 1-9-1 in the RMAC conference with only three games left in the season. They are not yet mathematically out of the RMAC tournament (top six teams get to go) but they do need some help from other teams and the cards to fall just right to make it.

CSU-Pueblo will get their next chance for a win this Sunday when they host Colorado Christian University at 2:30pm at the Rawlings Soccer Complex.

"We lost to Christian last time, they caught us on the counter, so of course we'd like to win this time around," said Stanley "We are going to bring the same kind of high energy to the field this Sunday as we always do."
