Doubleheader split combined with Fort Lewis sweep drops Pack to second place.
LAKEWOOD, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 31, 2012) - CSU-Pueblo ultimately fell out of first place in the RMAC standings Saturday after splitting a pair of games with Colorado Christian, winning 7-5 before losing 8-4.
The ThunderWolves' split, combined with a doubleheader sweep by Fort Lewis over Western New Mexico Saturday, dropped the Pack a game behind in the standings with a 16-8 conference record.
CSU-Pueblo claimed its win Saturday on a sixth-inning comeback to seize the lead from Colorado Christian.
Trailing 5-4, the ThunderWolves cashed in three extra base hits to surge ahead of the Cougars. Aimee Spathias (Jr., Glendora, Calif.) led off with a double, and was sent home on a triple from Alexa Snyder (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.), tying the game at 5-5. Samantha Rios (Jr., Fullerton, Calif.) gave the Pack the lead on an RBI double, putting the Pack up for good.
Shannon Traxinger (Sr., Arvada, Colo.) secured the win by retiring the Cougars' final six batters in order.
The late game was not as rosy for the Pack as it lost an early 1-0 lead after a four-run third inning by the Cougars, paving the way for their 8-4 win.
CSU-Pueblo, now 19-10 and 16-8 in RMAC play, has six games on the docket next week - first a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with Adams State before hosting New Mexico Highlands next weekend.
