GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 25, 2012) - CSU-Pueblo suffered two very frustrating losses Saturday as it opened its RMAC season with a sweep at the hands of Colorado Mesa, losing 5-4 and 14-6.
In the day's first game, CSU-Pueblo only allowed five Mesa hits but they did damage, allowing the Mavericks to up 5-0 on the Pack after six innings. Four of Mesa's five hits were for extra bases, and they also benefitted from six walks.
CSU-Pueblo, meanwhile, made a spirited attempt in the 7th inning to steal the game, but it was ultimately too little too late. Sidney Bailey (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) and McKenzie Joseph (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) each singled to start off the inning, but after two subsequent outs, CSU-Pueblo had to rely on a two-out rally that almost came to fruition.
Ariel Lopez (Fr., Fontana, Calif.) singled home a run, which was followed by a two-run double by Brittany Styger (Fr., Kent, Wash.). An RBI-single by Justine Bosio (Jr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) brought the Pack within one, but working with the two outs proved too much as time ran out on the Pack.
In the late game, Pack pitchers broke down as Mesa plated 14 runs, scoring runs in every inning but one and mercy-ruling the Pack after six innings. Despite home runs by Bosio and Lopez, CSU-Pueblo would get as close as two runs on a number of occasions but never made a credible threat to take the lead.
CSU-Pueblo does have another chance to even the series as it is scheduled for another doubleheader with the Mavericks Sunday at 11 a.m.
