ThunderWolves miss golden opportunity, swept by Mesa

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 23, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo missed a chance to climb to the top of the RMAC Western Division standings Saturday, falling on the short end of a doubleheader sweep to Mesa State.

The ThunderWolves were bounced out of the park in the first game as four different pitchers saw action in a 13-5 loss, bringing the Pack back to reality after its doubleheader sweep of Mesa State Friday.

But the second game was a different story as the game went back and forth until the final inning.

Things got very interesting for the ThunderWolves in the 5th inning when Sarah Bosshart (Jr., Irvine, Calif.) absolutely launched a three-run bomb far over the left centerfield fence, turning a 4-2 Mesa State lead into a 5-4 ThunderWolf lead.

The Pack held that lead until the top of the 7th when Mesa State when on a two-out rally, first on an RBI double by Shannon McClenahan followed by a single to centerfield that gave the Mavericks the lead on an ensuing run.

But the Pack tied the game in clutch fashion when Olivia Fimbres (Fr., Fontana, Calif.) launched a solo shot with two out to tie the game at 6-6 and send the game to extra innings.

However, a mistake untimately decided the game, as a throwing error on an infield single allowed the winning run to score, and in the bottom of the 8th, CSU-Pueblo couldn't recapture its rally magic.

With the losses, CSU-Pueblo finishes the weekend where it started - tied for 7th place in the RMAC standings and two games out of the RMAC Western Division lead.  The ThunderWolves close out their season on the road at Fort Lewis next weekend.
