Pack makes logjam in RMAC West Division even more complicated with doubleheader sweep.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 22, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo was downright dominant Friday in a doubleheader against RMAC West Division-leading Mesa State, leaving no doubt in sweeping the Mavericks by scores of 10-7 and 9-1.
The Pack turned a dreary situation - 4-0 deficit after the top of the first inning in the first game - into an offensive free-for-all, scoring 10 straight runs in the first game before winning 10-7, and staying hot in the 9-1 run-rule contest in the late game, to cruise to the doubleheader.
The key for the Pack in the first game was a six-run third inning, which saw Olivia Fimbres (Fr., Fontana, Calif.) go yard for a two-run home run, which was followed later in the inning by a three-run double by Marissa Cates (Fr., Murrieta, Calif.), creating a 7-4 lead.
Additional homers by Samantha Rios (So., Fullerton, Calif.) and Lacey Chesser (So., Oxnard, Calif.) provided insurance in the win.
The Pack kept rolling behind a stellar performance by pitcher Marissa Reyes (Fr., Santa Paula, Calif.) in the second game, who allowed just one run in the run-rule affair and fired a home run over the fence, to boot.
Offensively, the star was Rios, who hit a three-run shot in the second inning, part of her 3-for-3 game at the place. Combined, Rios was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day with five runs scored and five RBI, notching two home runs.
CSU-Pueblo is now just a game out of the RMAC West Division lead, currently in the middle of a four-team logjam in the division, in which the four squads are separated by just one game. The ThunderWolves will finish its series with the Mavericks Saturday at 11 a.m.
