Pack rides extra-inning comeback to sweep of Highlands.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 2, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo rode a raucous extra inning comeback to a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico Highlands Saturday, its first doubleheader sweep of an opponent this season.
The Pack overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first game, mounting a rally in the bottom of the 7th inning and scoring three runs - two coming on an Olivia Fimbres (Fr., Fontana, Calif.) triple to right centerfield, turning a 5-2 game into a 5-5 tie.
Later, Lacey Chesser (So., Oxnard, Calif.) struck an RBI double in the 10th inning that carried the Pack to a 6-5 win. On the play, catcher Dannielle Oliva (So., Pueblo, Colo.) scored all the way from first base, setting up a play at the plate that saw Oliva reach under the tag of Highlands catcher Roxy Avalos to secure the win.
In the late game, the ThunderWolves held on to the momentum, hanging five runs on Cowgirl starter, Ashley Paiz, in the first inning. Paiz did most of the damage to herself, hitting one batter, walking another, and letting two ThunderWolves score on wild pitches during the game-clinching opening inning.
The wins mark the first time this season CSU-Pueblo has claimed a doubleheader win. It sets up the Pack for the series finale Sunday, where they hope to claim its first series victory of the season, having split all RMAC series but one so far this year.
