Pack lays egg in Springs

Game 1: UCCS 6, CSU-Pueblo 5
Game 2: UCCS 8, CSU-Pueblo 6

COLORADO SPRINGS - Needing a series win to keep pace with Western New Mexico in the overall RMAC West Division standings, CSU-Pueblo took a major step backward when it lost two in a doubleheader Sunday to a sub-.500 UCCS team.

CSU-Pueblo lost game one 6-5 on a walk-off three-run home run before losing 8-6 in the nightcap.

The ThunderWolves had a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning when the normally unflappable Justine Bosio (So., Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a rare lapse in the circle, allowing a walk-off three-run homer that delivered a win to the Mountain Lions.

In the late game, The Pack gave up two runs in each of the first four innings, falling behind 8-6.  However, CSU-Pueblo couldn't make up the disadvantage in the game's final three innings, and fell to its fifth loss in six games.

The losses are even more costly, as the UC-Colorado Springs virtually clinches the "Steel and Silver Series" title for the fourth consecutive season.  "The Steel and Silver Series" is an all-sports competition between UCCS and CSU-Pueblo, which awards four points to the school that wins the season series in each sport the two schools share.  Sunday's sweep assures UCCS of at least a season split in softball, and awards two points to UCCS, which is one point away from clinching the title with two softball games, a men's golf showdown and outdoor track and field remaining.  UCCS currently holds a 22-10 lead in the Series, and CSU-Pueblo would need to win two softball games Monday, defeat the nationally-ranked men's golf team in the RMAC Championships in May, finish higher than UCCS in women's outdoor track, as well as win the student-athlete GPA competition between the two schools to win the Steel and Silver title.

The ThunderWolves will finish their series with the Mountain Lions Monday with another doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
