T-Wolves sweep pair in home opener

CSU-Pueblo 1, Nebraska-Kearney 0
CSU-Pueblo 5, Chadron State 0

The CSU-Pueblo softball team opened the 2010 home schedule with two non-conference wins, beating Nebraska-Kearney in the first game 1-0, before delivering another shutout with a 5-0 victory over Chadron State.

In game one, CSU-Pueblo starting pitcher Kyla Nelson (So., Lakewood, Colo.) gave up only two hits, with 8 strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Though Nelson pitched effectively so did UNK starting pitcher Dani Mowinkel, who like her counterpart gave up two hits along with 11 strikeouts.  The lone run of the game would come in the bottom of the 6th inning when Bo Nuanez (Sr., Lafayette, Colo.) connected on her first homerun of the season.

In game two CSU-Pueblo broke open a scoreless game by putting up five runs in the home half of the 3rd inning.  The highlight of the inning came when Lacey Chesser (Fr., Oxnard, Calif.) delivered a two-out grand slam over the left field fence, giving the Pack all the cushion needed to close out the visiting Eagles.

The doubleheader shutout victories marks the first time the Pack has done so since defeating Adams State on March 9, 2003 when they defeated the Grizzlies 8-0, 10-0 respectively.

In the final game of the day that had Nebraska-Kearney playing host to Chadron State.  In that game the Eagles of Chadron State were able to hold off a late rally to hold on to a 2-1 victory of the Lopers.

All three teams will be in action again tomorrow, game times scheduled for 10 am, 12 pm and 2 pm at Rawlings Softball Complex.
