Pack suffers overtime setback to undefeated Mines

Lawrie's second-straight 20-point game not enough to lift Pack.

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Dec. 11, 2010) - Despite outplaying the Orediggers in nearly every offensive category, CSU-Pueblo couldn't pull out the win Saturday, losing 64-61 in overtime to Colorado Mines.

CSU-Pueblo held a 31-27 lead at halftime, but Mines went on a 15-4 run to open the second half, opening up a lead it would hold for the better part of the second half.

But the Pack, trailing 42-35 at that low point, would embark on a 13-3 run that would put CSU-Pueblo in control going into the waning minutes.

CSU-Pueblo, however, couldn't close it out, going 1-for-3 from the field in the final three minutes, committing two fouls and giving up one ball on a turnover, allowing the Orediggers to tie it up at 55 and bring on an overtime period.

But in a slow-moving overtime period that echoed the slow, deliberate pace of the game, no team ran away with it, trading buckets until a three-point play at the 1:05 mark gave Mines a 62-59 lead it wouldn't relinquish.

The Pack bested Mines in a number of statistical categories, including shooting (.511 to .404), three-pointers (seven to two), and nearly won the rebounding battle (31-30 for Mines), but the undefeated Orediggers reigned in two departments: free throws made (16 to 8) and turnovers, committing just six to the ThunderWolves' 17.

CSU-Pueblo got a 20-point output for the second consecutive game from Kris Lawrie (Sr., Gardena, Calif.) and a 15-point effort from Daniel Pierce (Sr., Edgewood, N.M.), but very few standout performances otherwise in a low-scoring effort.

CSU-Pueblo, now 3-4, will go on its first conference road trip of the season next weekend when it faces Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands before starting the Winter Break.
