CSU-Pueblo 2, Mesa State 1 F/OT
The CSU-Pueblo Men's soccer season rebounded from a loss earlier
in the weekend to steal a conference game away from Mesa State
2-1 in OT Sunday in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Pack struck late in the overtime period with just :31
seconds left in the first overtime when Johnny
Valenzuela (Sr., Las Cruces,
NM) delivered the ball 20-yards out to Brenden Hughes (Fr.,
Fort Collins, Colo.) who then shot at goal, hitting it off
the post right back to Hughes feet, allowing for the easy put back
to give the Pack the big conference win.
"Our guys provided the energy once again that was needed and our
defense was solid in shutting them down" said head coach Roy
Stanley.
The Pack struck first off a Mesa State foul that was called for
a penalty kick and Dylan Cook
(Sr., Albuquerque, NM) scoring his second
of the year. CSU-Pueblo with the win improves their
record to 6-5-0 (2-4-0 RMAC) and remains in the hunt for a playoff
position.
"With this big win it gives us confidence for next weekend when
we return home for a big Friday, Sunday weekend series against
Mines and UCCS," Stanley said.
CSU-Pueblo will return home next week to play host to currently
nationally ranked Colorado Mines on Friday and UCCS on Sunday, game
times 4 pm and 1 pm, respectively.
