CHADRON, Neb. - The ThunderWolves hung tough in their first road
RMAC dual of the season Friday, but couldn't overcome stellar
performances by Chadron State's top flight wrestlers, losing 27-15
to the Eagles.
Chadron, coming in as the 14th-ranked team in the country, saw
all three of its nationally-ranked wresters, Devlon Webb (125),
Brett Hunter (174) and Josh Majerus (197) score wins over
ThunderWolf entrants, accounting for 11 team points, nearly the
margin between the two teams in the dual. Hunter and Majerus
each earned four-point major decision wins, while Webb, the
third-ranked 125-pounder in the country, got a challenge from the
Pack's Lyle Evans (Jr., Grantsville, Utah),
winning his match in a 3-0 decision.
Hunter's and Majerus' win undid a hot start by the
ThunderWolves, which held a 15-7 lead after six matches. The
dual began at 125 pounds.
The matches the Pack did win were in dominant fashion.
Martin Dick (Fr., Azle, Tex.) had the biggest win,
scoring a 19-2 technical fall of Bryan Irwin at 165 pounds.
The Pack's winningest wrestler, Louie DeSantis (Jr.,
Escondido, Calif.), scored four points for the
ThunderWolves with a 10-2 major decision win over Phil Bullington.
Keenen Funk (Jr., Riverton, Wyo.) and
Joe Jones (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) each earned
decisions, both grabbing their second consecutive wins.
The ThunderWolves now fall to 0-3 in RMAC duals, and 2-5 overall
in duals this season.
The ThunderWolves' trek gets no easier, as their road trip
continues in Kearney, Neb. Saturday when they take on the defending
national champion, Nebraska-Kearney.
