PUEBLO, Colo. (September 14, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's and No. 8 men's cross country programs are set to compete at the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite Saturday in Gunnison, Colorado, which is hosted by Western State Colorado University.
The first collegiate action is slated for a 10 a.m. start with the College Men's 8K. Following the men, the College Women's 5K will begin at 10:45 a.m.
Senior Marcelo Laguera (Chihuahua, Mexico) won the Colorado College Invitational Saturday and paced the men to a second place finish in the opening event of the 2018 season. The ThunderWolves were second only to No. 3 Colorado School of Mines. The Pack women were fifth in the race.
Laguera posted a time of 25:31.9 in the 8K race and finished 13 seconds ahead of second place. The ThunderWolves had three student-athletes in the top 10, as senior Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) was eighth in his first cross country race since 2016, as he crossed the finish line in 26:11.6. Senior Alec Choury (Westminster, Colo.) was 10th with a time of 26:15.0.
For the women, the squad collected 96 points for fifth and were 19 points out of third. Sophomore Nicole Bouma (Kalispell, Mont.) paced the team in the 6K race with a time of 24:06.8, which was good for 12th in field of 88 athletes. In her first collegiate race, freshman Claire Pauley (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) was 16th, as she crossed the finish line in 24:17.9. Sophomore Hailey Streff (So., Madison, S.D.) was 25th overall and clocked a time of 24:53.8.
