PUEBLO, Colo. (August 30, 2017) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's cross country programs both appeared in the preseason national rankings, while the squads were also highly ranked in the region and in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Gathering Preseason All-RMAC honors were Miriam Roberts (Sr., Boulder, Colo.) for the women and Marcelo Laguera (Jr., Chihuahua, Mexico) and Paul Roberts (So., Boulder, Colo.) for the men.

Season Opener Set for Friday

The ThunderWolves begin the 2017 season Friday, Sept. 1 at the Colorado State University Duals in Fort Collins, Colorado. The women's 5K race is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the men's 5K run slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Hughes Stadium Cross Country Course. The field includes Division I schools (CSU, Colorado, Northern Colorado and Wyoming) and familiar Division II foes (Colorado Mesa, MSU Denver and Western State).

Men Rank No. 7 in National Rankings; Top Three in Region and RMAC

The men's program is coming off a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships last season and returns four scoring members of that team. Leading the way this season will be Laguera, who earned All-American honors by finishing 22nd overall at last year's championships. Roberts was an all-region team member and was the top American finisher for Team USA at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March.

The Pack men earned the No. 7 spot in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Preseason poll. The ThunderWolves were No. 3 in the organization's South Central Region preseason rankings and were also third in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Adams State University and Colorado School of Mines were one and two, respectfully, in both the RMAC and region rankings and first and third in the national poll.

Women Come in at No. 20 Nationally; Sit Top 5 in Region and RMAC

The ThunderWolves logged a historic finish to the 2016 season when they placed 16th at the NCAA Division II Championships to record the best placing in program history. Roberts guided the Pack with an All-American performance where she placed 17th. This season Roberts will guide a young team, which is also anchored by fellow senior Rachael Lopez (Fort Lupton, Colo.) and sophomore Gillian Mannes (Kalispell, Mont.), an All-RMAC Second Team member last season.

The ThunderWolves sit No. 20 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Poll for their second preseason national ranking in program history (No. 20 in 2015). In the South Central Region, the Pack were slated to finish fifth, while in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, CSU-Pueblo tied for fourth with Colorado Mines.

Adams State University was first in the RMAC ranking (second nationally), while Western State Colorado University was second (third nationally). University of Colorado Colorado Springs came in third in the RMAC, fourth in the region and No. 17 nationally. The Orediggers were third regionally and No. 11 in the national list.
