AUSTIN, Texas (August 31, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball went winless on the first day of the Hilltopper Classic. The ThunderWolves fell to St. Edward's University 3-0 in the morning session, before dropping five-set battle to Eastern New Mexico University 3-2.
Facing the host Hilltoppers, the ThunderWolves challenged St. Edward's in the first set, but ultimately fell 25-21. St. Edward's cruised to a 25-15 win in set two and completed the sweep in game three, 25-17.
The Hilltoppers held the Pack to a .060 hitting percentage. The Pack was outblocked 9-1 in the first match of the day.
Berkley Hays (Fr., Dallas, Texas) knocked down a team-high six kills and hit. .286 in the first match of the day. Hays also had a solo block against the Hilltoppers.
Mallorie Post (So., Federal Way, Wash.) matched Hays with six kills in the morning session. She also hit .286.
Freshman Grace Hern (Omaha, Neb.) dished out 12 assists in two sets. She also accumulated three digs.
In their second match of the day, the ThunderWolves engaged in a highly competitive battle with the Greyhounds. After dropping set one 21-25, the Pack dominated set two 25-16
The Greyhounds regained the momentum with a 25-21 win in set three. CSU-Pueblo answered in the fourth set, as they bounced back with a 25-22 set win. In the fifth and decisive set, the Greyhounds went on a 6-0 run that handed them a 15-11 set win and the match victory.
After recording 13 digs against the Hilltoppers, Page Heller (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) achieved a career-high 30 digs in the five-set fight with the Greyhounds. Heller put down four aces, also a career-high. She finished with six assists.
Post set a career-high with 14 kills against the Greyhounds. She hit .333. Post also swatted three attacks.
Brooke Schilling (So., Platteville, Colo.) picked up her third double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs. The 16 kills marked a career-high for Schilling as did her three blocks.
Freshman, Madelaine Haynie (Richland, Wash.) rejected five Greyhound attacks. Haynie hit .267 with six kills in the afternoon clash.
Kelsey Bell (Jr., Los Lunas, N.M.) earned her first double-double of the season and second of her career. Bell delivered 13 digs and 39 assists, both career-highs.
The Pack will continue play in the Hilltopper Classic Saturday when they play Purdue Northwest University at 11 a.m. They wrap up non-conference play at 2 p.m. with a match against University of Texas Permian Basin.
