PUEBLO, Colo. (September 17, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's tennis team hosted the Pueblo Duals Thursday-Sunday at Pueblo City Park. The ThunderWolves went 0-4 in competition against out-of-conference foes.
Senior Nia Matthews (Houston, Texas) led the team with four total victories, which included a 3-1 record at No. 1 singles. She was also victorious once with Kali Hamilton (So., Grapevine, Texas) at No. 1 doubles. Hamilton totaled two wins on the weekend with a victory at No. 2 doubles. The Pack played a player down in all four matches, forcing them to forfeit a doubles match and the No. 6 singles bout.
Thursday against University of Texas-Permian Basin, a fresh squad was able to post just a 4-3 loss despite forfeiting matches and having their No. 5 retire due to injury. Matthews and Hamilton combined to win in a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (8-6), but the team doubles point went to the Falcons. The top three singles matches were won by CSU-Pueblo. Matthews posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1, Hamilton was victorious by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 2 and at No. 3, junior Sarah Megilligan (Pueblo West, Colo.) grabbed a straight set win 6-3, 6-4.
The Pack lost 7-0 to University of Nebraska-Kearney, before suffering 6-1 losses to Fort Hays State University Saturday and Newman University Sunday.
Matthews won Saturday at No. 1 singles by the scores of 6-4 and 6-2. She allowed just two points in the win Sunday, winning by identical 6-1 set scores.
The ThunderWolves now turn their attention to the ITA South Central Regional, set for Sept. 28-30 in Wichita Falls, Texas and hosted by Midwestern State.
