PUEBLO, Colo. (May 30, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Swimming & Diving Head Coach Brian Pearson announced the signing of eight freshman who will compete for the ThunderWolves during the 2018-19 season. These eight student-athletes are Alexis Bower, Emma Chvatal, Cierrah DeWoody, Alyssa Grunloh, Courtnie Lingaas, Madison Ortega, Natalie Rotondo, and Julia Whitfield.
Alexis Bower (Fr., Riverside, Calif. / Patriot High School):
Led the River Valley League with a time of 1:03.63 in the 100 backstroke… Posted a career-best time of 57 seconds in the 100 free to lead the River Valley League… Placed 14th at the California Interscholastic Federation SS Division 4 meet in the 100 back with a time of 1:07.24… Helped the Warriors to 11th place finishes in the 200 free relay (1:48.33) and the 200 medley relay (2:03.93) at the CIF Division 4 meet.
Coach Pearson: "Alexis, our future high school English teacher, brings tenacity, resourcefulness, and academic prowess to the ThunderWolves. This California animal lover will add much needed depth to our Backstroke and Freestyle events."
Emma Chvatal (Fr., Carterville, Ill./ Home School)
Won the 1 L Free at the 2018 OZ SALU Saluki Open Water with a time of 26:17.32… Placed first with a record time 1:18.75 in the 100 Back at the 2018 OZ SALU Saluki International.
Coach Pearson: "Our first commitment and swimmer from the Land of Lincoln, Emma will help us in the IM's, Fly and Distance events. Don't let her quite domineer fool anyone, she comes in with the ThunderWolves top seed in the 400 IM, second in the 200 IM, fourth in the 200 Fly & fourth in the 500 Free."
Cierrah DeWoody (Fr., Richardson, Texas / JJ Pearce High School)
Won the one meter championship at the Northeast Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association meet… Claimed first place at the City Championships for the Mustangs… Won the 2018 District Championship… Placed eighth the 2018 6A Region 2 meet with a score of 252.80… Posted a career-best of 289.50.
Coach Pearson: "Cierrah, the punctual, social, reading loving diver, comes to the Thunderwolves most recently from Texas. With a strong gymnastics background and home ties to Colorado Springs, we cannot wait to see how much her lists improve this year."
Alyssa Grunloh (Fr., Round Rock, Texas / Cedar Ridge High School)
Was a finalist for the regional Championship…Finished fourth in the 500 free with a 5:21.88 at TISCA CCSID Zone Championships… Set a Raiders record with a time of 57.36 in the 100 free at the 2014-15 Texas 4A Region 6A State Championships.
Coach Pearson: "Our energetic Lone Star native, Alyssa, comes to us from Cedar Ridge High School and Waterloo Swim Club. Her uplifting talent will bolster Mid-Distant and Distance groups. Alyssa has already been placed in the Thunderwolves's top four for next season in the 500 free, 1000 Free, and 400 IM."
Courtnie Lingaas (Fr., Brighton, Colo. / Horizon High School)
Finished eighth in the 200 free at the 2015 Front Range Conference Championship with a time of 2:01.04… Set a career-best with a 1:58.42 in the 200 free…Swam a personal-best of 5:23.42 in the 500 free and an 18:18.37 in the 1650 free… Set a career-best with a 2:11.13 in the 200 back.
Coach Pearson: The newest addition to the Thunderwolves, Courtnie hails from Horizon High School and the Front Range Barracudas. This resilient, persistent young lady comes in ranked second on the team in both the 1650 Free and the 400 IM, third in the 200 free, the 500 Free, and the 200 Back.
Madison Ortega (Fr., Pueblo West, Colo. / Pueblo West High School)
Finished third at the 2018 South Central League Championships with a score of 290.80.
Coach Pearson: "A hometown hero, Madison will be a great addition to the ThunderWolves's diving program. With her open-mindedness and good attitude, we cannot wait to see what Madison accomplishes this year."
Natalie Rotondo (Fr., Aurora, Colo. / Smoky Hill High School)
Named to the All-City team in both 2016-17 and 2017-18… Earned Centennial league Athlete of the Month honors in 2017… Nominated for Swimmer of the Year…
Coach Pearson: "This enthusiastic, eccentric, joyful ThunderWolf joins us from Scott Cohen's Smoky Hill High School Buffaloes. Natalie is a Sectional Qualifier and a High School State finalist who will do well in the RMAC. Natalie comes to us with the team's top time in the 100 and 200 backstroke, ranked top four in the 50 free, 100 free, 500 Free, 100 fly, and 200 Fly."
Julia Whitfield (Fr., Wichita, Kan. / Wichita East High School)
Named All City in each of her four seasons with the Aces… Competed on the Aces All-American 200 yard Freestyle relay team… Named to the All-Metro girls Swimming & Diving Team.
Coach Pearson: "A talented, spunky, committed sprinter joins the Thunderwolves from America's Air Capital Wichita, Kansas. Julia helped lead East High School to 2017 State Championship. She is already in team's top four in the 50 free and 100 free. Julia will be a great help in sprints and relays."
