COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (January 11, 2017) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Swimming & Diving freshman Phoebe Pontious earned the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week Award of 2017.
Pontious (Caledonia, Mich.) celebrated one of the best meets in school history this weekend at the Austin College Invite. She won three events and anchored two Pack relays to victory, giving her five total wins for the meet. Thanks in part to her efforts, the ThunderWolves won the Austin College Invite with 773 points, nearly double the second place team.
The freshman began her day with a relay win, anchoring the Pack's 200 medley relay team to first place. She reached the wall first in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.99. Pontious also took the top spot in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:02.64, over a second better than her closet competition.
Pontious dominated the 100 free (56:92), outouching the competition by almost four seconds. She wrapped up her career day by anchoring the Pack's 200 free relay to victory.
In the Pack's meet against Colorado College, Pontious placed second in both the 50 butterfly (27.34) and 100 free (55.54). Pontious took third in the 50 free (25.52). Her 50 free time ranks as the fifth fastest in school history.
With this honor, Pontious becomes the first Pack swimmer to secure a Swimmer of the Week award during the 2016-17 season. It is also the first conference honors Pontious has received. She becomes the third Pack swimmer to receive this honor in school history.
Pontious and the Pack return to action Jan.20-22 when they compete at the Colorado College Classic.
