MESA, Ariz. (January 3, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo swimming and diving team opened the 2015 calendar on a strong note, placing fourth at the Citrus Classic, Saturday. Emily Foster (Jr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) and April McDonough (Fr., Frisco, Texas) headlined the day for the ThunderWolves, placing first in two and one event, respectively. CSU-Pueblo recorded 325 points to finish fourth out of seven squads.
Foster was the top performer for the Pack, winning the 100 and 200 breastroke. In the 200 breastroke, Foster notched a time of 2:39.70 to win by nearly five seconds. Leila Zijadic (Fr., North Vancouver, B.C., Canada) finished third in the event after touching the wall in a mark of 2:45.32. Foster's win in the 100 breastroke came after the junior tallied a time of 1:11.87.
McDonough had the remaining first-place finish for the ThunderWolves, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.30. Samantha Sannes (Fr., Torrance, Calif.) gave CSU-Pueblo a one-two finish in the event, touching the wall right behind McDonough with a mark of 2:03.79. McDonough logged a time of 58.22 in the 100 freestyle to place third.
The ThunderWolves had a pair of top-five finishers in the 200 individual medley as Sannes (2:19.86) and Foster (2:30.01) placed second and fourth, respectively.
Sannes capped her solid day with a third-place time in the 400 individual medley at 4:54.76.
Magdalena Contreras-Gomez (Fr., Austin, Texas) and Taylor Wertz (Fr., Lamar, Colo.) both had strong showings in the 100 butterfly. Contreras-Gomez finished in third with a time of 1:03.86, while Wertz posted a mark of 1:07.51 which was good for fourth.
CSU-Pueblo's next meet will take place Jan. 16-18 at the Colorado College Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo.
