COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 14, 2018) - The No. 23 Colorado State University-Pueblo women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, dropping a 3-0 decision in front of a brash crowd at Mountain Lion Stadium.
On a brisk evening on the pitch, the ThunderWolves came out of the gate sluggish and was quickly met by the tall Mountain Lion defense who started to double team the Pack's midfield from the onset.
That pressure allowed the Mountain Lions to keep the ball in their half of the field and they created four good looks at the net early.
After the third corner kick in the first fifteen minutes by the home team, it was in the 21' when UCCS converted a goal on a shot from 15 yards out and into the center of the net.
Exactly three minutes expired on the game clock when the Mountain Lions again found the ball deep in Pack backfield and a pass from the right side to the front of the goal found the back of the net to give UCCS a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Through the first period UCCS outshot the Pack and the smothering defense held the ThunderWolves from having any corner kicks at the break.
In the second half, Mackenzie Bean (Sr., Bothell, Wash.) fired her two shots for the game and her attempt in the 64' allowed the Pack to three corner kicks taken by Kylee Sakaguchi (Sr., Apple Valley, Calif.).
UCCS added to its lead in the 79' from the right hash mark inside the left post.
Laikyn Koss (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) led the team with three shots.
Pack goalkeeper Rylie Martin (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) allowed three goals and faced a season-high 22 shots and she made four saves.
CSU-Pueblo (3-1-1) stays on the road for another big match at No. 11 MSU Denver Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Regency Athletic Complex.
