PUEBLO, Colo. (September 3, 2016) - Senior forward Laikyn Koss (Upland, Calif.) netted two first half goals in propelling Colorado State University-Pueblo women's soccer past Midwestern State 2-0 Saturday at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
Sitting out the last season due to injury, Koss quickly made her presence felt in 2016 as she connected the first goal of the year in the fifth minute on a corner kick from the right side and scramble in front of the net past a diving MSU goalkeeper.
Moments later in the 17th minute Koss received a pass by Megan Garcia (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) from across the field and hit a one-timer header shot beyond the reach of the Mustang goalkeeper.
CSU-Pueblo held a 5-4 shots and 2-0 corner kick advantage through halftime.
Much of the final period the ThunderWolves maintained possession and kept the Mustangs silent throughout.
The Pack defense had a strong performance led by Garcia, Rianna Lockhart (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jessica Westhoff (Jr., Centennial, Colo.). The trio helped in holding MSU to just eight shots including five on goal in the contest.
Pack goalkeeper Alison Darr (Sr., Placerville, Calif.) was a brick wall at the net, fighting off several hard kicked attempts at the net picking up the win and earning her sixth career shutout while with the Pack.
CSU-Pueblo (1-1-0) remains home next week for a match Friday at 7 p.m. against Emporia State. The Pack will conclude its homestand with a rare Tuesday evening match Sep. 13 versus Eastern New Mexico, both at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
