PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Sept. 6, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo claimed its first season-opening win since 2005 Friday night, defeating East Central (Okla.) 1-0 in new coach Paul Regrutto's first game on the bench.
Going into the game, the ThunderWolves had six injuries to key players on the roster. According to head coach Regrutto, the ladies knew that they were going to have to step up and put in the effort to come away with a win, and that's just what they did. Seven starters played a full 90 minute game, maintaining possesion most of the time.
Both sides kept pace in the first half, going shot for shot. The lone score of the game came at the 32nd minute, when Brittany Kliesen (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) came from the left side and scored from the bottom of the box on an assist from Kailyn Provin (Jr., Torrance, Calif.), giving the Pack their first goal of the season.
Savannah Thompson (Sr., Upland, Calif), recently named to the Preseason All-RMAC squad for 2013, had four saves on the night out of four shots on goal.
The ThunderWolves outshot the Tigers 13 to seven, and seven to 4 on goal, respectively.
According to Regrutto, the win was a result of two things: effort and maintaining posession of the ball.
"Everybody did a great job," Regrutto said. "The growth from our last exhibition game a week ago was tremendous."
"This was a start on the right foot, a game we've been targeting since preseason and we were able to earn the win. I'm really happy for the girls. They've worked hard and they deserve it."
CSU-Pueblo will host the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears this Sunday at 10 a.m.
