No. 7 ThunderWolves set for three bouts at the Midwest Duals Saturday


PUEBLO, Colo. (January 12, 2018) - The No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team will compete in three matches Saturday at the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Nebraska, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. 

The ThunderWolves will wrestle Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe San Francisco State University at 8 a.m. MST to begin the day. Next the Pack battle Fort Hays State University at 9:30 a.m. MST before finishing with No. 19 Maryville University at 11 a.m. MST. All bouts can be followed live on

CSU-Pueblo is coming off an eighth-place finish at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals where they went 2-3 against five members of the nation's top 25. The ThunderWolves recorded wins against No. 4 California Baptist University (25-21) and No. 5 McKendree University (23-15). The Pack were guided by senior JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) and sophomore JaVaughn Perkins (Omaha, Neb.). Jones posted a perfect 5-0 record at 165, all decision victories, which included a win against the No. 4 wrestler nationally. Perkins wrapped his tournament with a 3-0 record at 184, all decision wins, which included defeating the No. 1 wrestler nationally by a 3-2 decision. Perkins was named RMAC Wrestler of the Week for his efforts. Both are ranked No. 2 nationally in their weight classes in the latest rankings (Dec. 28). 

Senior Jared Mestas (Pueblo, Colo.) was a perfect 2-0 at the National Duals, while No. 6 PT Garcia (Jr., Denver, Colo.) was also 2-0 and defeated No. 12 Naquan Hardy of McKendree by tech fall, 17-2. Senior heavyweight Cody Johnson (Broken Arrow, Kan.) went 3-2 in the five bouts and recorded the only two pins of the duals for the ThunderWolves. 

CSU-Pueblo makes its home debut Wednesday, Jan. 17 when it welcomes RMAC rival Adams State University at 6 p.m.
