COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (January 9, 2018) – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference named Colorado State University-Pueblo's JaVaughn Perkins (R-So., Omaha, Neb.) as the RMAC Wrestler of the Week, Tuesday in an announcement from the league office.
The award is the first of the season for Perkins and the second time a member of the Pack has gathered the weekly honor, as Cody Johnson (Sr., Broken Arrow, Okla.) was recognized Nov. 14. Perkins won the award once last season as a freshman.
Perkins went 3-0 at 184 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals, which included defeating No. 1 Nick Fiegener of No. 4 Cal-Baptist by a 4-1 decision. Perkins, who ranks No. 2 nationally at 184, helped guide the No. 7 ThunderWolves to an eighth place finish at the National Duals, which featured nine of the top 10 teams in the nation.
He won his other two bouts by decision, a 7-1 win against his opponent from No. 24 Wheeling Jesuit and a 10-9 victory in a team win against No. 5 McKendree. The matches were the first at 184 this season for the returning All-American.
The ThunderWolves will compete at the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Nebraska January 13, hosted by University of Nebraska Kearney. The Pack will wrestle in three duals beginning at 8 a.m. MST against San Francisco State.
