PUEBLO, Colo. (January 3, 2018) - The No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team will compete at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Multi-Divisional National Duals Jan. 4-5 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The ThunderWolves are one of 16 teams in the NCAA Division II bracket, which features nine of the top 10 teams in the latest national rankings.
The Pack found the podium and were fourth at last year's National Duals. This year CSU-Pueblo will start with No. 24 Wheeling Jesuit University at 9 a.m. MST. Win or lose the ThunderWolves will wrestle at 11 a.m. MST against either No. 4 Cal-Baptist or No. 18 Gannon University. Last season the Pack suffered a 21-20 criteria loss to Wheeling Jesuit in the semifinals. WJU would go on to finish second.
The latest NWCA National Poll was released Dec. 28 and placed CSU-Pueblo No. 7. Individually, four wrestlers were ranked in the top 12. Senior JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) is ranked No. 2 at 165, while sophomore JaVaughn Perkins (Omaha, Neb.) is No. 2 at 184. Sophomore PT Garcia (Denver, Colo.) ranks No. 6 at 133 and junior Kyle Fantin (Cave Creek, Ariz.) sits No. 9 at 157.
The ThunderWolves last wrestled at the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 17, where they finished 12th of 50 teams that scored with 40 total points. Fantin guided the team, as he was 4-1 at 157 entering the consolation round of 8, but had to forfeit due to injury. After winning 10-1 by major decision in the first round, Fantin fell by major decision to move to the consolation bracket. There he won by a 9-1 major, a third period fall (6:37) and a 7-2 decision. The injury ended his tournament, which served as the first action of the season for the returning national qualifier.
Jones and Clay Archer (Sr., Broken Arrow, Okla.) both posted three wins and also reached the consolation round of 8. Three more Pack wrestlers picked up two victories.
