BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 11, 2017) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team concluded the NCAA Division II National Championships Saturday with JaVaughn Perkins (R-Fr., Omaha, Neb.) wrestling his way to fourth, while junior JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) was eighth. Both earned All-American honors for their finishes.
The ThunderWolves totaled 21 team points to finish 22nd of 44 team represented. CSU-Pueblo sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, which was tied for the most since the program restarted in 2008.
Perkins won his first bout at 184 by a 3-0 decision against the No. 8 wrestler nationally to advance to the consolation semifinals. In his next bout, he posted a third-period pin aginst the No. 9 wrestler at 5:54. In the third-place match, Perkins fell by the score of 3-2 to the No. 6-ranked wrestler. The redshirt-freshman entered the weekend ranked No. 3 by d2wrestle.com.
Jones became a three-time All-American with the eighth-place finish at the 2017 national championships. He became the eighth wrestler in Pack wrestling lore to secure three or more All-American honors (one of which is head coach Dax Charles).
Wrestling at 165, he lost in the first bout of the day by a 7-6 decision to No. 3 Calvin Ochs of University of Nebraska-Kearney, which he had fallen to twice earlier this season. In the seventh-place bout, Jones got turned on his back early and was pinned by the No. 5 wrestler in the first period.
