PUEBLO, Colo. (March 9, 2017) - Four members of the No. 14 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team will compete at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships March 10-11 in Birmingham, Alabama.
The championships will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex and is one of five championships being celebrated at the NCAA Division II Winter Festival.
First round action begins at 10 a.m. MST and then continues Friday at 5 p.m. MST. The wrestling begins at 9 a.m. MST Saturday.
The ThunderWolves sent four wrestlers through to nationals, which ties the most by the Pack since the return of the program in 2008. At 133, PT Garcia (R-So., Denver, Colo.) was the Super Region Four Champion, while JaCobi Jones (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) at 165 and JaVaughn Perkins (R-Fr., Omaha, Neb.) at 184 were regional runner-ups. Kyle Fantin (R-So., Cave Creek, Ariz.) battled his way through the region to a fourth place finish.
Jones returns to the national stage after earning All-American honors as a freshman (165 - 6th) and last season as a sophomore (157 - 8th). The other three wrestlers will be testing their abilities at the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time.
133 - #4 PT Garcia (R-So., Denver, Colo.) - Ranks No. 4 nationally with a 15-4 overall record ... Went 3-0 at regionals to be crowned Super Region Four Champion ... Owns five pin falls ... Recorded a dual record of 9-1 with two pins, which included a 3-0 mark in RMAC bouts (one fall) ... Finished third at the RMAC Championships ... Named RMAC Wrestler of the Week on back-to-back weeks (Feb. 8 and Feb. 15) ... Has won eight straight bouts and 14 of his last 15 matches entering the national championships.
157 - Kyle Fantin (R-So., Crave Creek, Ariz.) - All-RMAC Second Team ... Owns a 24-12 overall record with three pins ... Went 5-2 at regionals and won his true fourth match by injury forfeit to advance to the NCAA Championships ... Posted a 10-4 mark in dual competition, which included a 6-1 (one fall) mark in RMAC bouts ... Ranked No. 11 in the first edition of the national rankings ... Finished second at the RMAC Championships ... Was fourth at both the UNO Open (Nov. 13) and UNK Holiday Open (Nov. 19).
165 - #6 JaCobi Jones (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) - All-RMAC First Team ... 2017 RMAC Champion ... Ranked No. 6 nationally with a 17-6 overall record ... Went 3-1 at regionals and lost to then-No. 2 Calvin Ochs of UNK by a 3-2 decision in the title bout ... Totaled six falls ... Produced a 9-2 dual record with three falls ... Went a perfect 5-0 in RMAC duals ... Has won nine of his last 10 bouts entering the national championships.
184 - #3 JaVaughn Perkins (R-Fr., Omaha, Neb.) - Ranked No. 3 nationally with a 14-5 overall record and seven falls ... Went 3-1 at regionals ... Defeated No. 9 Zach Stodden in the semifinals before he lost 5-4 in the first tiebreaker to No. 2 Nick Fiegener of Cal-Baptist in the final ... Notched a 7-1 dual record with two falls and a 4-0 RMAC record (one fall) ... Finished third at his first RMAC Championships ... Named RMAC Wrestler of the Week Jan. 24 ... Has won 12 of his last 14 bouts entering the national championships.
