KEARNEY, Neb. (November 21, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team competed at the 6th Annual University of Nebraska at Kearney Holiday Inn Open Saturday. Kyle Fantin (R-So., Crave Creek, Ariz.) guided the ThunderWolves with a fourth-place finish at 157.
The Pack had four total wrestlers finish in the top six of the elite tournament. Sophomore Josiah Seaton (Bonner Springs, Kan.) was fifth at 125 and senior Kyle Bateman (Sandy, Ore.) was also fifth while wrestling at 174. John Lewis (R-Jr., Parker, Colo.) placed sixth at 184.
Fantin wrestled his way to the semifinals of the 157 bracket with two decision victories (3-1 and 9-3), but would fall 1-0 to move to the consolation side. He won his first bout by a 6-3 decision before losing by pinfall in the third-place match. He went 3-2 in the tournament.
Seaton won his first match at 125 by a 10-8 decision, but lost his next one by a 10-6 margin. He went on to win his next two bouts 11-6 and 7-6, but was pinned to get pushed to the fifth-place match. He needed extra time, but would win in the first sudden victory round to claim fifth. He finished with a 4-2 record.
Bateman won his first match with a second period pin at 4:33 and won again by an 11-4 decision to advance to the semifinal bout of the 174 bracket. He lost by a 9-5 margin and would lose again on the consolation side (pin at 5:00) to get relegated to the fifth-place match. His opponent had to forfeit, handing Bateman the fifth-place spot.
Lewis lost his first bout 7-2, but worked his way to the fifth-place match where he suffered a technical fall loss.
The last event of the fall season for the Pack will be the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 18 in Reno, Nevada.
As a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Colorado State University – Pueblo competes in 22 varsity sports in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics.
