Pack claws Eagles 76-57, behind third quarter barrage

PUEBLO, Colo. (January 26, 2018)   Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball used a dominant third quarter performance to conquer Chadron State College 76-57 Friday night at Massari Arena. 

Up four at the half, the Pack scored 29 points in the third courtesy of an 11-0 run and a 10-0 run in the quarter that led them to the win. The Pack shot 62.5 percent in the third (10-for-16).

Lauren Heyn (Jr., Penryn, Calif.) earned her third double-double of the season. Heyn scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. She also went 2-for-2 from the line. Heyn pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds and matched her season-high with three blocks.

Senior Tuileisu Anderson (Vancouver, Wash.) led the Pack with 17 points. Anderson swished 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and 5-of-11 from the field. She was a perfect 4-for-4 the line. Anderson added four rebounds. 

Taylor Long (Sr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) also went 5-of-11 from the field on her way to a 12-point night.  Molly Rohrer  (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added 10 points. Jennah Kanfelc (Jr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored nine points off the bench. 

Katie Cunningham (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) dished out five assists. Cunningham provided seven points and three steals in the win.

CSU-Pueblo got off to a hot start as two 3-pointers from Anderson and a lay up from Long made it 8-2.  However, eight fouls in the first quarter prevented the Pack from gaining momentum as the Eagles fought back within three, 18-15 after one.

The Eagles started the second quarter on a 9-0 run that helped them take their first lead of the game. A trio of 3-pointers from Cunningham, Long, and Knafelc put the Pack back in front 27-24. They would carry a 31-27 lead into the break. 

Coming out of the locker room, the Eagles cut the lead to one just seven seconds into the quarter. They would never get any closer as the Pack went on a 11-0 run that lasted over three minutes, making it 42-30. Two minutes later the Pack went on a 10-0 run that made it a 20-point lead, 58-38. They led 60-41 after three.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles closed the gap to 13 thanks to a 10-2 run, making it 70-57. The Pack scored the final six points of the game, five of which came from senior Katie Jones (Baldwin, Kan.) to pull away with a 76-57 win. Jones scored eight points in nine minutes.

The Pack now stands at 14-6 thanks to their 21st consecutive win over the Eagles. They lead the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 12-2 RMAC record. Chadron State fell to 3-17 (1-13 RMAC).

The ThunderWolves continue their two-game homestand Saturday when they face Regis University at 5:30 p.m. It will be Take A Kid To The Game Night at Massari Arena. All kids 18& under will receive free admission. There will be a kid zone with coloring, face painting, and autographs with the Pack men's and women's basketball teams. Halftime dogs will perform at halftime of both games.
