SPEARFISH, S.D. (December 30, 2017) – Down one entering the final 10 minutes of play, Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball outscored Black Hills State University 21-9 in the fourth quarter to knock off the Yellow Jackets 60-49 Saturday at the Young Center.
The Pack improved to 9-4 overall. CSU-Pueblo wrapped up December with a perfect 7-0 record. This 7-0 mark has the Pack at the top of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. Black Hills State fell to 10-3 (4-3 RMAC).
Despite a cold night shooting from downtown, the Pack outshot the Yellow Jackets 39.7 percent to 30.5 percent. The ThunderWolves also forced 24 turnovers in the win.
Katie Cunningham (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) and Lauren Heyn (Jr., Loomis, Calif.) both had double-double efforts. Heyn led the way with 12 points and 12 rebounds. She went 5-of-10 from the field and came away with two steals.
Cunningham totaled 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She also pulled down 11 rebounds and handed out four assists. Cunningham notched two steals.
Molly Rohrer (Jr., Greenwood Village, Colo.) led the Pack with 14 points. Rohrer also rejected three Yellow Jacket shots. The Pack center set a career-high with 40 minutes played.
The two teams stayed close throughout the early going. Black Hills State built a 10-6 lead, but the Pack answered with an 8-0 run to go up 14-10. The Yellow Jackets closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to go up 15-14 after one.
CSU-Pueblo scored the first six points of the second quarter to go up 20-15. This would be the game's biggest lead until the fourth quarter. The Pack would lead 26-25 at halftime.
A back and forth third quarter saw the Yellow Jackets reclaim the lead 40-39. Neither team led by more than a bucket in the third.
The Pack took over in the fourth, starting the quarter on an 11-0 run. They would never relinquish the lead as they rolled to a 60-49 win. Heyn scored 10 points in he fourth quarter. She made 4-of-5 from the field and hauled in six rebounds to help the Pack clinch the win.
After an undefeated December, the Pack will return to Massari Arena for the first time in a month. They will host South Dakota School of Mines Friday Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
