COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 2, 2018) - Colorado State University-Pueblo sophomore Thomas Staines (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week recognition after running the fastest 800m time in NCAA Division II this outdoor season.
Staines has earned his first career outdoor athlete of the week honors, but the second of 2017-18 after gathering indoor honors Feb. 6 when he ran the fastest indoor 800m time in the division.
Staines continued to run at a high level, as he scorched the track with an NCAA automatic time of 1:48.54 in the 800m run at the Spank Blasing Meet Saturday. He is just three weeks removed from winning the national championship in the indoor 800m. The mark converted to a school record time of 1:47.96 to rank as the top mark in NCAA Division II this outdoor season. His raw time also ranks sixth among all divisions and would be third with the converted time. He also ran a sub-:47 400m on the anchor leg of the winning 4x400m relay team that recorded a time of 3:13.67.
The ThunderWolves keep the outdoor season rolling April 6-7 at the CU Invitational at the Balch Fieldhouse in Boulder, Colorado.
