GUNNISON, Colo. (May 7, 2017) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's track and field programs competed on day one of the 2017 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Gunnison, Colorado Sunday.
The women are in third after the first of three days with 16 points, while the men have accumulated four points to sit eighth.
The women were guided by a second and third place finish in the long jump. Freshman Lauren Fairchild (McKinney, Texas) has excelled this spring in the event and posted a personal best at 5.70m to finish second. With a leap of 5.67m, junior Tatianna Clanton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was third. The two combined for 14 points.
Sophomore Nikol Podlacha (USAF Academy, Colo.) scored a point in the hammer after finishing eighth with a throw of 50.06m.
Finally, senior Jordan Mathes (Boise, Idaho) was eighth in the 10,000m run with a time of 40:20.98.
The Pack men picked up four points in the long jump when junior Ron Sweeten (Falcon, Colo.) finished fifth in the event with a leap of 6.91m.
The ThunderWolves advanced at least one athlete in all the track events they had an entry in. All finals will be run Tuesday.
Both the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams have advanced to the finals and are each seeded fifth. The men's squad is made up of Sweeten, sophomore Tevin Donnell (Fountain, Colo.), junior Bradley Ransome (Castle Pines, Colo.) and sophomore Shawn Horne (Camp Casey, South Korea). The Pack women have a relay team of senior Andrea Tuck (Canon City, Colo.), Fairchild, freshman Taliah Burney (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Clanton.
The men's team advanced two in the 1500m run, as junior Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) won his heat and is seeded third for Tuesday's final. Senior Dante Carter (Las Vegas, Nev.) also advanced and is seeded eighth. Junior Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) advanced in the women's 1500m and is seeded fifth for the finals.
Junior Dueth Vassell (Denver, Colo.) will be seeded first in the 400m finals after his time of 48.36 was tops in the field. Horne will be seeded third. Burney was first in her heat and will be seeded third in the finals of the women's 400m dash.
Donnell advanced in the 100m dash and is seeded fifth, while Clanton will run in Tuesday's final seeded sixth.
Senior Sydni Riley (Florissant, Colo.) was first in her heat and will be seeded third in the 800m dash, an event she won at the indoor championships. For the men, freshman Thomas Staines (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up the eighth and final spot in the 800m run.
Action begins for the ThunderWolves at 1 p.m. Monday with field events (discus), while track events get started at 3:30 p.m. with the 3000m steeplechase.
