Williams named RMAC Academic Athlete of the Year; 16 athletes honored


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 29, 2017) - Colorado State University-Pueblo junior Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Male Indoor Track and Field Academic Athlete of the Year Wednesday, as the league office announced their Academic All-RMAC selections.

A total of 16 members of the Pack men's and women's programs were recognized for their efforts in the classroom. Williams and senior Dante Carter (Las Vegas, Nev.) were honored as Academic All-RMAC First Team for the men, while seniors Bailey Hughes (Bigfork, Mont.) and Sydni Riley (Florissant, Colo.) picked up the first team award for the women.

Williams owns a 3.99 GPA in biology (biomedical sciences) and EXHPR (general exercise science). He was the NCAA Elite 90 Award winner for the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, which recognizes the top GPA at the meet. He exited the championships with two All-American honors, as he was third with the men's distance medley relay team and was fourth in the 3000m run.

Carter touts a 3.9 GPA in computer information systems. He was also an All-American with the DMR and qualified for nationals in the mile.

Riley owns a 3.99 GPA in psychology and sociology. She was an All-American in the 800m run after finishing seventh at the national meet. She also ran with the women's DMR, which finished 11th. Riley was the the RMAC Indoor runner-up in the 800m.

Hughes is a graduate student with a 4.0 GPA in education (instructional technology). She qualified for the national meet with the DMR and in the 3000m run.

The Pack men scored 11 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships to finish tied for 18th, while the women scored (four points) for the first time at an NCAA indoor national meet to finish T-40th. Both teams finished fifth at the RMAC Indoor Championships.

The outdoor season continues April 1-2 at the CSU-Pueblo Open. The meet has been adjusted from Friday-Saturday to Saturday-Sunday due to weather conditions. Saturday will feature throwing events at 3 p.m., while the track events get things started Sunday at 10:15 a.m.
