Distance runners post provisional marks in outdoor opener
PUEBLO, Colo. (March 19, 2017) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's track and field programs wasted no time getting the outdoor season underway, as it hosted the Slope Challenge Saturday at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl just one week after completing indoor nationals.

The Pack welcomed Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Mesa University and Western State Colorado University for a four-team meet. The Pack women had six individual meet winners and totaled 129 points to finish second overall. The men had five event winners and compiled 94 points to sit fourth.

To add a little fun to the event, the scores of CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Mines were combined against the total scores of Colorado Mesa and Western State. With 258.5 points, the Mavericks/Mountaineers combo edged the ThunderWolves/Orediggers team as they totaled 233.5 points on the women's side. The same two teams won on the men's side by a 294-224 margin.

Five of the event winners for the Pack women were one week removed from appearing at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Junior Tatianna Clanton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was a national qualifier in the long jump, but is also one of the team's top sprinters. She won the 100m and 200m races in 12.85 and 25.67, respectfully.

Senior Sydni Riley (Florissant, Colo.) was an All-American in the 800m run at indoor nationals and won the 1500m race Saturday with a time of 4:43.42. Bailey Hughes (Sr., Bigfork, Mont.) ran in the 3000m and with the women's distance medley relay team last week. She posted a winning time and NCAA Division II outdoor provisional mark of 37:38.10 in the 10000m run. Junior Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) was also a member of that DMR and ran the distance race Saturday for a provisional time of 37:42.55.

The ThunderWolves won the 4x400m relay, as they did at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, with a time of 3:59.06. This time the squad was made up of freshman Lauren Fairchild (McKinney, Texas), freshman Taliah Burney (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Clanton and Riley.

The Pack also picked a win in the long jump when Fairchild leaped 5.32m in her first outdoor collegiate meet.

Sophomore Shawn Horne (Camp Casey, South Korea) won the 400m dash in 49.09 and was a member of the winning 4x400m relay team. The rest of that squad was made of junior Ron Sweeten (Falcon, Colo.), Horne, indoor national qualifier freshman Thomas Staines (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Dueth Vassell (Denver, Colo.).

Vassell was a member of the All-American DMR team that finished third at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The lead runner of that DMR was senior Dante Carter (Las Vegas, Nev.), who won the 5000m run with an NCAA outdoor provisional mark of 14:42.66. Freshman Paul Roberts (Boulder, Colo.), a indoor national qualifier, also ran the 5000m to a provisional time of 14:49.87.

Staines was the first attached runner to cross the finish line in the 1500m run, as he posted a time of 3:59.03.

Sweeten won the long jump with a mark of 6.97m.

The Pack remain home to host their final event of the outdoor season March 31-April 1, the CSU-Pueblo Open.
