Williams honored as CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team

AUSTIN, Texas (June 23, 2016) – Colorado State University-Pueblo sophomore Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) was honored Thursday as a member of the 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's Track & Field/Cross Country First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Twenty-three of the 45 members of the 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's Track & Field/Cross Country teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 10 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 15 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.85.

CSU-Pueblo had five members earn Academic All-America honors in 2015-16, which marked the most by the institution in an academic year since the program began in the 1950's. The other four were Corbin Feenstra (football), Sam Glawe (men's soccer), Jake Ludwick (football) and Joe Rosenbrock (football).

Williams holds a 3.99 GPA in biomedical science and exercise science at CSU-Pueblo. The sophomore was an All-American following the cross country season and after a fourth place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the outdoor championships, earned All-American status from both the NCAA and USTFCCCA. He has gathered five All-American honors in his time with the Pack.

Academic All-RMAC First Team following cross country and outdoor track and field seasons ... Named USTFCCCA All-Academic ... Garnered All-American honors following the cross country and outdoor track and field seasons ... Finished 14th at his first NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships (30:06.9) ... Finished fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 8:58.10 to earn All-American honors from both the NCAA and USTFCCCA ... Recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Region perofrmer in cross country and in three outdoor events, the 1500m, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m ... RMAC Outdoor Champion in 3000m Steeplechase ... At the end of the outdoor regular season, owned top 10 times nationally in 3000m Steeplechase (4th), 1500m (6th) and 5000m (9th) ... Owned fastest 5K time in the nation for a day ... Redshirted the indoor track and field season.
