PUEBLO, Colo. (March 18, 2018) - Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team beat Chadron State 4-1 in the series finale and fell by the same score of 4-1 in game one against the Eagles resulting in a weekend series split at Rawlings Softball Field.
For the day the ThunderWolves were led offensively by Gabby Moreno (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.) who went 4-for-7 at the plate to go with two runs scored and a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
In game one the visiting team scored one run in the first on two hits taking an early 1-0 lead.
CSU-Pueblo got its first run in the next inning, taking advantage of a defensive error to even the match at one apiece.
Michaela Burpee (Jr., Union City, Calif.) scored for the Pack after taking a pitch to the back leading off the inning.
Pack starting pitcher Hannah Anderson (So., Spokane, Wash.) kept CSC at bay throughout the middle innings and hit a snag in the fifth inning allowing an unearned run to cross.
The Eagles extended the lead in the sixth with two runs scoring on a couple of hits and a Pack error.
In the last at bat the ThunderWolves was unable to get after Chadron starting pitcher Jessica Jarecki who finished with seven strikeouts including two in the final frame to seal the win for Chadron.
The series finale CSU-Pueblo wasted no time in attacking CSC starter Megan Horn, tagging her for three runs in the first inning. Burpee hit an RBI-single and Morgan Hatfield (Jr., Upland, Calif.) slugged a two-run double to right field to put the Pack on top.
Chadron scored its only run on a sac flyout in the third and was controlled in the circle by K'Lee Kent (Sr., Hobbs, NM) who made her third appearance of the weekend. Kent went the distance and allowed one run and gave up just four hits in the game and improve to 6-6 on the season. She finished with three strikeouts on the day.
The Pack took advantage of another Eagles' error in the fifth and extended the lead.
Kent shut the door on Chadron in the seventh after one runner reached base and a flyout to right ended the game.
Over the weekend Moreno went 9-for-15 at the plate with five runs and nine total bases. In the circle Kent totaled two wins and threw 15.2 innings. She gave up four earned runs and fanned eight batters while posting a 1.79 ERA versus Chadron.
CSU-Pueblo (8-17, 7-9 RMAC) goes on the road next and play a four-game RMAC series Mar. 24-25 at Regis. The weekend begins Saturday at noon at Regis Softball Field.
