BROOMFIELD, Colo. (March 5, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team settled for a split of its four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series against Black Hills State played at Holy Family HS over the weekend in Broomfield, Colo.
The Pack swept the first two games Saturday posting 2-0 and 3-1 wins. CSU-Pueblo was unable to find its groove Sunday as they dropped the final two games of the series 13-5 (6 innings) and 8-2.
The ThunderWolves gathered thirty-two hits in the series but left a staggering 37 runners on base. Gabby Moreno (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the Pack offensively going 9-for-15 with a walk, two runs and four RBIs.
Saturday in the series opener CSU-Pueblo's K'Lee Kent (Sr., Hobbs, NM) tossed a complete game allowing no runs on four hits and three strikeouts and three free passes.
Moreno picked up two RBI singles in each of the third and fifth inning for the Pack.
The first four batters in the lineup recorded twelve of the Pack's 13 hits.
In game two the ThunderWolves offense kept on the pedal scoring one run in the first on back-to-back triples from the leadoff Alyssa Ubrun (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) and Moreno.
Michaela Burpee (Jr., Union City, Calif.) got in on the RBIs hitting a single in the fifth to drive in the second run of the game.
With two outs in the sixth and runners on the corners, Sabrina Felix (So., Corona, Calif.) hit an 0-1 pitch through the infield to cushion the Pack's lead to 3-0.
CSU-Pueblo starting pitcher Hannah Anderson (So., Spokane, Wash.) had another effective outing throwing seven innings and scattered eight hits. Her one run allowed came on a solo homerun hit in the seventh.
The Pack avoided any further damage after a defensive error and two hits loaded the bases. Anderson enduced a groundball to shut the door and even her record to 2-2 on the year.
Sunday the ThunderWolves jumped on BHSU starting pitcher Alex Wiley scoring two first inning runs.
The Yellow Jackets responded in their first at bat and tied the game with two outs.
BHSU took a commanding lead in the fourth with six runs scoring to push the score to an 8-2 Black Hills lead.
In the fifth CSU-Pueblo cut into the lead with three runs on two hits and taking advantage of two defensive errors. Morgan Hatfield (Jr., Upland, Calif.) hit a two-run double with two outs to bring the score to 8-5.
Black Hills scored five runs over the next two innings and scored the winning run with two outs in the sixth, a 13-5 BHSU win.
In the series finale the Pack left nine runners on base and was unable to take advantage of five walks allowed by Yellow Jacket starting pitcher Melissa Gellermann.
CSU-Pueblo scored single runs in the third and fifth inning but had little answer to BHSU offensive attack.
Anderson was tabbed with both losses in the circle and drops to 2-4.
CSU-Pueblo (5-10, 4-4 RMAC) stays on the road and play a four-game series at Adams State University. First pitch Saturday is set for 12 p.m. at ASU Softball Field.
