Pack offense comes alive in DH sweep of MSU Denver

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 25, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team used a big offensive outburst to get past Metropolitan State University of Denver Sunday in a doubleheader played at Runyon Field. The Pack came from behind to win game one 5-4 and took care of business in game two, an 8-2 victory.

The ThunderWolves slugged a combined 23 hits in two games to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against the Roadrunners. Four Pack players collected two hits and an RBI in the winning effort.

In the series opener Michaela Burpee (Jr., Union City, Calif.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI to lead the way. The teams battled and went scoreless through the first five innings with the Pack getting two hits to the Roadrunners' one in that span.

MSU Denver scored the games' first run in the sixth inning on a leadoff double and two singles. The ThunderWolves responded in next at bat with a single run scored thanks to a triple from Burpee, that rolled to the wall scoring Sabrina Felix (So., Corona, Calif.) who reached via hit by pitch.

The visiting team tallied two more runs in the seventh to build a 4-1 lead going into the final at bat.

CSU-Pueblo put pressure on MSUD with patience at the plate from Morgan Hatfield (So., Upland, Calif.) and Hailey Bennett (Jr., Norco, Calif.) each got on base with one out.

An infield single from the next batter, Gabby Moreno (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.) set the stage for Felix who smacked a dribbler up the middle to cut into the lead.

Following a MSUD pitching change, Burpee earned a walk to again load the bases down one run.

Freshman Marissa Piatt (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) next stepped to the plate and recorded her first game-winning single to right centerfield, to score two runs and secure the 5-4 victory.

Pack starting pitcher K'Lee Kent (Sr., Hobbs, NM) tossed a gem of a game scattering four runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the year.

In the nightcap MSU Denver scored first in the first inning but was quickly matched in the Pack's first at bat as two runs crossed. The heart of the lineup for the Pack accounted for both runs.

CSU-Pueblo scored two more runs in their next at bat on a single from Shelby Bennett (Jr., Norco, Calif.) and another triple recorded this time off the bat of Alyssa Ubrun (Sr., Olympia, Wash.). Ubrun scored during the next at bat capitalizing on a Roadrunner defensive error.

Two doubles in the third frame and another error in the fourth allowed the Pack to build a 6-1 lead going to the fifth.

The Roadrunners scored one run in the fifth but would not muster another run in the contest. CSU-Pueblo scored and extended its lead by two runs in the home half of the sixth.

Starting pitcher for the Pack Hannah Anderson (So., Spokane, Wash.) had her most effective outing on the year and improved to 1-2 on the season. Anderson allowed two runs and scattered ten hits and two strikeouts.

CSU-Pueblo (3-6, 2-0 RMAC) wrap the series with another doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Runyon Field.
