Martindale’s record setting day lifts ThunderWolves past Fort Lewis

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 22, 2017) – Colorado State University-Pueblo softball senior Lexie Martindale (DP, Pueblo, Colo.) had a career day Saturday as she set a new CSU-Pueblo record by hitting four doubles in a game and five hits on the day in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over Fort Lewis College. The Pack won game one 11-4 and held on to win game two 11-10 at the Rawlings Softball Complex.

Martindale slugged her way in to the CSU-Pueblo record book in game one, hitting her fourth double to lead off the sixth inning.

Martindale was also effective in the pitcher's circle, tossing two innings of relief and allowed one earned run and scattered four hits from the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis scored two runs in the first inning on three hits and a Pack error for an early 2-0 lead in the series opener.

The Pack took its first lead on three runs crossing in the home half of the second. Moriah Turney (Sr., 2B, Brighton, Colo.) and Gabby Moreno (Fr., 3B, Scottsdale, Ariz.) each smacked RBI-singles and a bases loaded walk issued to Michaela Burpee (So., C, Union City, Calif.) provided the scoring in the frame.

FLC evened the score in the next at bat on a solo homerun hit by Angelique Elemen.

The Skyhawks took a one run lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth on three hits before the Pack responded with its first four-run inning in the home half of the fifth.

Turney collected another RBI-single, coupled with three wild pitches and another bases loaded walk built the Pack's lead to 7-4 after five innings.

The Pack continued their prowess in the next inning scoring four more runs on a grand slam hit by Shannon Lieber (Sr., P, Lone Tree, Colo.), the first bomb of her Pack career.

Lieber then turned around and shut the door on the Skyhawks in the seventh as the Pack came away with the 11-4 victory.

In game two Morgan Hatfield (So., 1B, Upland, Calif.) went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double and a run scored to lead the ThunderWolves.

Both teams matched single runs in the first inning for a 1-1 score after one.

The Pack put up a four spot in the second inning, Sabrina Felix (Fr., OF, Corona, Calif.) crushed a 2-run double off the centerfield wall after fouling off nine pitches before getting to Skyhawks pitcher Olivia Goldberg.

K'Lee Kent (Jr., DP, Hobbs, NM) hit a single just inside the left field line scoring two runs.

In the third inning the Pack received RBIs from Moreno and Kennedy Smith (Sr., OF, Fillmore, Calif.) and build a 7-1 lead.

The Pack added four runs on a Moreno and Turney RBI each and Lieber earning her second free pass of the game.

Fort Lewis chipped away at the lead and scored four runs in the seventh before Martindale again clipped the Skyhawks leaving the bases loaded in an 11-10 Pack victory.

Martindale picked up a pair of wins and improves her record to 12-10 on the season.
