Pack cruise past Black Hills State

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 5, 2017) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team swept its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series of the season Sunday against Black Hills State. The Pack defeated the Yellow Jackets 10-2 in six innings and completed the sweep 7-3 in the series finale.

Sabrina Felix (Fr., OF, Corona, Calif.) gathered five hits in the two games finishing 5-for-8 at the plate and three runs scored.

In game one Black Hills scored the game's first runs in the second inning on three hits in the frame including a 2-run double.

The Pack got on the board in their next at bat on a Kennedy Smith (Sr., OF/C, Fillmore, Calif.) earned free pass with the bases loaded, taking advantage of an error from Black Hills State earlier in the inning.

The scoring continued for the Pack in the third highlighted by a 2-run homerun off the bat of Christa Angers (Fr., 1B, Villa Park, Calif.), her third of the season.

Moriah Turney (Sr., 2B, Brighton, Colo.) helped score the third run of the inning on an RBI-groundout and build a 4-2 Pack lead.

Pack pitcher K'Lee Kent (Jr., Hobbs, NM) was effective in the circle going six innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two to earn her first win of the season and improve to 1-3 on the year.

BHSU was held in check over the next three innings setting the stage for a big scoring inning in the home half of the sixth.

Leading off the inning, the first two hitters reached via infield singles allowing Gabby Moreno (Fr., 3B, Scottsdale, Ariz.) to step to the plate and crush her second homerun of the weekend scoring three runs.

RBI-singles by Christa Angers (Fr., 1B, Villa Park, Calif.), Kent, and Smith rounded out the six-run inning, ending the game with a 10-2 (6 inn.) run-rule victory.

In the series finale Black Hills found its offense in the first inning and scored three runs on five hits in the frame.

The ThunderWolves defense settled after the first and allowed the Yellow Jackets just four hits in six innings after the first inning hiccup.

Lexie Martindale (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) picked up her second win of the weekend and improved to 5-4 this season. She tossed 5 2/3 innings in relief, giving up just three hits and no runs.

The Pack tallied a single run in the fourth, taking advantage of a defensive error, allowing Vivian Ledesma (So., SS, Colton, Calif.) to score and take their first lead of the game at 4-3.

In the sixth Moreno belted a 2-run double off the wall in right centerfield, coupled with an RBI single by Felix secured the Pack win 7-3.

CSU-Pueblo (7-9, 4-4 RMAC) remains home next week and welcomes Adams State for a four game RMAC series at the Rawlings Softball Complex.
